Joseph Havel is a postmodernist American sculptor who is a master of transforming the domestic and mundane into the poetic and timeless. In his hands, shirts, bed sheets, and drapes mutate from the ordinary into something otherworldly. Havel describes his artistic process as uncovering “the activity of still objects.” The meaning associated with the objects he transforms is both amplified and changed; a psychological shift challenges viewers to reassess what they know and what they feel.
Joseph Havel lives and works in Houston, Texas and in Ménerbes, France. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Joseph Havel received his BFA in Studio Arts from the University of Minnesota and a MFA from Penn State.
